Finding the actual fullest point
The bust measurement is taken at the fullest point of the chest — for most people, that's at or close to nipple level, but it isn't universal. Look straight-on in a mirror and find the point where the tape would sit at its widest before you commit to a reading; measuring an inch too high or too low can shift the final number more than people expect.

Posture, arms and breathing all matter
Relaxed at your sides
Raising your arms lifts tissue and shrinks the reading — keep them down and natural, the same position you'd stand in while wearing a bra.
Neither slouched nor rigid
An exaggerated straight-backed stance or a slouch both distort how tissue sits against the ribcage — aim for how you'd naturally stand.
A relaxed, normal breath
Holding your breath in or fully exhaling before reading the tape can shift the number slightly either way.
Resting, not pulling
The tape should lie against you without compressing anything — pulling it tight understates the true measurement.

Turning the number into a size
Your bust measurement on its own isn't a cup size — it only becomes one alongside your underbust (band) measurement. Subtract the rounded band number from the rounded bust number to get your cup index, then use the bra size calculator to convert both numbers into a full size automatically, or check the difference against the cup size chart yourself.
